Silver Peaks Waitangi Weekend Wander

It has been a while since a weekend Bivouac Dunedin Trail Runners outing. It's a long weekend, the weather currently looks favourable and its an epic circuit on our doorstep. Meet on Mountain Road (see location) and we'll head off in the traditional anti-clockwise location. It means a gentle start for 6 km along Mountain Road to the Yellow Ridge Track turning. There we begin the the descents and ascents that feature on the circuit. Descending to the South Branch of the Waikouaiti River there is a sustained ascent up the Yellow Ridge Track before descending again into the head of Christmas Creek. Passing ABC Cave, the ups and downs continue on the way to Jubilee Hut before tackling Devil's Staircase to ascend to the circuit's highest point beside Silver Peak. Emerging onto the Green Ridge section we'll enjoy the largely downhill coast back to the cars. Distance is in the 24-25 km range and somewhere near 1500 metres of total ascent.
