Route Details

Welcome to another week of variable weather. However, it does appear that the worst of the precipitation will be over, but southwesterly winds and showers seem to order for Thursday evening. This week we will meet on Doctors Point Road, near an entrance to the Orokonui Lagoon Walk (see location). Starting out on tarmac and unsealed road we’ll head along to and up White Road. There we’ll pick up the Mopanui Ridge Track, that also includes the delightful David’s Track. We ascend these tracks to the Orokonui Ecosanctuary Perimeter Road. This undulating unsealed road encircles the perimeter fence. Reaching the Ecosanctuary building we then head down the western edge to meet the Orokonui Stream Track. It is then a gentle, but undulating run along this track, around the eastern side of Orokonui Lagoon and a gentle glide on tarmac back to the waiting vehicles. Headlamps essential along with extra layers. It can be exposed to the elements for a large portion of the ascent on this one. It’s approx. 13.5 km and around 600 metres of ascent (not entirely sure of that figure). Hopefully the few tracks and mainly unsealed roads provide a reasonable running surface. It’s a bit further out to travel, so allow time. See you there.
