Areas & Points of Interest
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....... a request was heard and, now, will be fulfilled - Davies Track, here we come! Starting at the base of the Pineapple Track, we'll head along the forestry track to the beginning of Davies Track. This track has all the elements of good trail running: mud, consistent ascent, narrow and winding (at times indistinct) track, hook grasses and a combination of flax, broom and gorse to push through near the top. The Flaggy fire had cleared the very top section, but the regrowth is starting to claim the track once more. Davies Track is just shy of 2 km and has approx. 400m of total ascent. Are you sold yet? Reaching the regular benched track to Flagstaff, we turn left and head to the summit. Leaving the summit there is a chance to send it down to the Bull Ring car park. Meeting up once more, we'll head down Flagstaff-Whare Flat Road to the start of the Jim Freeman Track. This wonderful track draws you in with a gentle start, before turning upward and continuing in that fashion up to the Firebreak Track. We have the opportunity of a break from the ascent, by visiting the nearby Ben Rudd Shelter. All that remains is a descent of the Pineapple Track and a glide down McGouns Track back to the base of the Pineapple Track. Estimated distance is somewhere around the 13 km mark and probably over 800 metres of total ascent. Pretty exposed on the tops, so make sure you have layers available. The final section is in bush and the evenings are drawing in, so a head torch might be worth packing.
