Possum Hut Sunday Mission

Sunday, 10 July 2016

Start point
Silver Peaks Mountain Range

Route Details

Sunday pack run, through the Possum Hut route (approx 7km) It's a whole lot of single track, creeks, amazing views and mud. If you've signed up for the Kepler, Naseby, Mt Somers... this is a very good training track for you! We'll run it in packs, according to how fast you want to go out. Depending on the turn out, there'll be a fast pack, mid pack and end pack. No one will run alone! How to get there: Head on out on state highway 1, towards Waikouati. Shortly after the petrol station, turn left onto Double Hill Rd, which continues on to Semple Rd and then Mountain Rd. The first 'carpark' is at the Green Hill DOC sign, continue about 1km on to the next 'carpark', which has the Possum Hut DOC sign. The Route: Possum Hut route descends very steeply down and crosses a few creeks, before you get to the Possum shelter. Very cool historic hut, worth checking out! The route then climbs steeply upwards onto a ridge, and towards the silver peaks. After about 3km, you will have reached the main track to Jubilee Hut, and a signpost that says Mountain Road 4km. You follow this, left, towards Swampy Summit. The track continues, undulating and a bit wider than before. It branches off to the left with 1km to go to Mountain Rd. Take this track, and you end up at the Green Hill carpark. Just under 1km of gravel rd running back to your car! What to bring: Water, food, head torch, extra layers and a light rain/wind jacket. Pretty much required gear for a race. Conditions can change quickly, so be prepared. **Make sure you know the route before you come.** Basic Map http://www.doc.govt.nz/Documents/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/otago/silver-peaks-tracks.pdf Topo Map http://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap/nz18580/Silverpeaks/
