Start point
Victory Beach / Okia

Route Details

It’s a bit further out to travel, but the stars and tides have aligned for this wee gem along one of Dunedin’s many marvellous beaches! The starting point is at the Okia Reserve car park on the Peninsula (see location). Initially we head back down Dick Road towards Papanui Inlet. Picking up a track to the Inlet’s edge, we use the low-tide to skirt the edge of the inlet before picking up a single track into pine forest emerging at the southern end of Victory Beach. Turning up the beach we pass the flywheel of the SS Victory visible at low-tide and potentially the odd sea lion. At the northern end of the beach we will pick up the track(s) of Okia Reserve and explore. After a short loop we’ll arrive at Dunedin’s pyramids. There’s a short scramble - practically the only vert on this outing - to the top of Te Matai O Kia/Little Pyramid if folk are interested. Once down, we have a short jog along a farm track back to the car park. Nothing complicated with this one, but on a beautiful day its a wonderful spot to be. Fingers-crossed with the weather! However, looks like we’ll be experiencing a bit of wet…oh well, wouldn’t be Dunedin if we didn’t, right? An estimated distance of 9 km and virtually no ascent. Let’s take it easy and enjoy the scenery.
