Route Details

This week, with a fine day forecast and evening light, I think a visit to Mihiwaka and her surrounds a great idea. One hill summit yet to be visited is that of Mt Cutten and the nearby art installation. The trails are varied underfoot and there are some short steep sections to be negotiated throughout the route. We’ll meet at the Port Chalmers Golf Club car park (see location). From there we ascend through forest to Cedar Creek Reservoir Road. Our first destination is the summit of Mihiwaka for, hopefully, great views over the harbour and peninsula. Retracing our steps and skirting around the Reservoir we’ll take the short route up to Mt Cutten and the Len Lye sculpture. Turning around on ourselves for the final time we’ll retrace our steps down to the Reservoir and back to the car park. An estimated distance of 10.5 km and approx. 540 m of total ascent don’t sound daunting, but it can be slow-going at times. Headlamps still required as will be descending through dense bush/forest at the end. The forecast at this stage looks good, but it can be breezy on top of Mihiwaka, so have an extra layer available.
